On 3 September 1881, Anton Bruckner completed his 6th Symphony in St. Florian, the complete premiere of which he was never to hear himself. It was not until 1899 that Gustav Mahler conducted the complete work, a “radiantly clear” Bruckner with lush Romantic scoring. In the Mondsee Basilica, Bruckner’s 6th Symphony will be heard in contrast to Liszt’s last symphonic poem “From the Cradle to the Grave”, composed in Rome in the same year, 1881, an intensely fading late work by the master.
