Description

From 16-23 July 2024, the Stephaneum Bad Goisern will host an exhibition that makes photography tangible, perceptible and accessible for everyone. These images were created jointly by blind and sighted artists during workshops in Tunisia, Nigeria, Spain and Japan.

The show is dedicated to aspects of cultural identity and examines how we perceive the world around us through images. After all, images are always mirror images, distorted and often hostile representations: Images define our thoughts and our actions. They tell us who we should be and enable us to feel that we belong to a community, a culture. In doing so, we often overestimate the power of images, while we put other senses to one side.

In a workshop taking place at the same time as the exhibition, we will continue the project and create new images, but ones that can be grasped with all the senses. Sighted photo artists work hand in hand with blind people or those for whom other forms of perception play a greater role. Together they explore the wonderfully deceptive world of images and learn from and with each other. It is an art project with audience participation, but also an attempt to scrutinise our increasingly visual and virtual communication. The results will be incorporated directly into the exhibition and will also be shown at the next exhibition – as part of the Havana Art Biennial 2024/25.

The programme is being held in collaboration with the OTELO association, the Austrian Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired and the Zero Project as part of the European Capital of Culture, Bad Ischl 2024. Special support comes from the EU-Japan Fest Foundation.

Workshop programme for blind and sighted people
Bad Goisern on Lake Hallstatt, 19-21 July 2024
Registration by email to touch@artecontacto.org or by phone: 0680 40 688 58

Programme: The workshops will take place on 19, 20 and 21 July. You can register for one, two or three days. Participation is free, you don’t need a professional camera, you can be visually impaired or not. The only thing you need to bring is a strong interest in artistic collaboration. Participants organise their own travel and accommodation. The results will be converted into tactile photographs on site and will become part of the exhibition. This way, everyone can participate equally in the production process and understand the jointly created images.

The program takes place in cooperation with the OTELO association, the Austrian Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired and the Zero Project as part of the European Capital of Culture, Bad Ischl 2024. Special support comes from the EU-Japan Fest Foundation.
