Description

When the whole of Bad Ischl celebrates the birthday of Emperor Franz I, Barbara Ungepflegt mingles with the guests. As a flâneur of unsuspected adventures, Ungepflegt transforms herself to such an extreme that she gives the impression of being Princess Diana resurrected from death.

The Viennese artist approaches the glorification of the Princess of Wales in meticulously conceived public appearances that show the contradictory nature of a (double) existence and the fragility between self-image and external image. Paraphrasing the media reality of the late Diana Spencer, central questions of identity, construction and glorification are at the centre of this work, which is a continuation of her previous art figure variations, such as the figure of the Federal Minister for Homeland Dirt and International Affairs or that of the clerk Babi K.. The striking external resemblance between Lady Di and Barbara Ungepflegt is taken to extremes in THE ROYAL PARTY CRASHER. The admirers, the insatiable “myth consumers”, as Roland Barthes once described them, will come into contact with royal figures such as Emperor Franz, Sisi and Lady Di on this day. Regardless of whether they are “real” or not.
