Even in times of crisis, people build. But differently than in times of plenty. Especially now it is important to use our resources sparingly. For the financial framework conditions are becoming tighter and the carrying capacity of our planet has also reached its limits. The climatic changes underway worldwide and the economic consequences of the COVID crisis require the development of simple, resilient, but above all cheap construction techniques, building types and building operating systems, such as alternative building cooling systems. These simple yet intelligent techniques and systems are accessible to broad sections of the world’s population, while short-lived, expensive high-tech systems do not meet this demand. The future will belong to houses built from the principle of mindful, knowledge-based use of locally available building materials and experiential knowledge. The result of this kind of building is more than a roof over one’s head for a few years; it is not a smart building that functions in a processor-controlled way. It is a simple building in the best sense, which makes few demands and primarily serves the people who use it. A building is smart when it simply functions well for a long time without any further intervention.
Simple Smart Buildings is a participatory knowledge transfer. Between spring 2023 and autumn 2024, six workshops will take place at different locations in the Salzkammergut (topics: including wood, lime burning/lime slaking, clay, and the investigation of historical substance). Employees of municipalities and building yards, pupils and students and all people interested in crafts are invited to participate in the workshops.
