The European Capital of Culture provides an impulse for the reinvigoration of the disappearing tavern culture in the country. With representatives from local and European gastronomy of the highest level, art and culture, thematic regulars’ tables will be initiated, taverns filled with art and culture, tavern labs will be started in tourism and vocational schools.
Genusslabor Bad Ischl
We are the Genusslabor. 18 students from the Bad Ischl tourism schools, together with teacher Lorenz Pesendorfer and Siriuskogl landlord Christoph “Krauli” Held, run a pop-up restaurant in Bad Ischl. Our vision is to show what a restaurant should look like for us future restaurateurs. It should be sustainable, regional and seasonal. Furthermore, it is important to us to do without goods from large corporations as much as possible. A pub of the future is also a place where everyone is welcome, but art will also have its place here. We, the 18 students, run the Genusslabor next to the school with many hard-working and supportive hands and look forward to the coming time in which we will gain a lot of practical experience.
Salzkammer-GUAD
37 pupils from the 3rd year of the HLW Don Bosco Vöcklabruck and four teachers – Elfriede Waldhör, Michaela Schachinger, Michaela Kreuzer, Christine Lahninger and Jochen Neustifter – are reviving the pub culture in the Salzkammergut region, which has in part been lost. For several days, we will open the doors of the former Rosenkranzwirt in Gmunden and the Moserei in Scharnstein. We will put our acquired knowledge into practice and take on everything from planning, organisation and costing to designing the menu and, of course, serving and preparing the deliciously created dishes. Traditional regional dishes will be combined with new culinary art and innovative concepts.
Die Wirtshaus Show
“Stammtisch Reanimation live” is the motto of Austria’s 1st pub show. The audience enters the world of the regulars’ table, which becomes a stage and welcomes two guests each from film, radio, television and everyday life. Conceived, produced and hosted by Kira Saskia Schinko, this show presents an entertaining mix of humorous conversations and cabaret.
HOT BOX BUILDING
The performative cooking collective Healthy Boy Band (Lukas Mraz, Philip Rachinger, Felix Schellhorn) developed the HOT BOX BUILDING in cooperation with friendship.is. The mobile installation works at a variety of locations and activates them for a certain period of time: in the center of town next to the abandoned taverns, on the lake in front of a picturesque mountain panorama, on the field directly with the productions, in abandoned industrial halls as ambassadors.
Music as a guest
No pub without music, no music without a regulars’ table. The Wirtshauslabor on a musical and culinary voyage of discovery. For this project, however, the musicians leave the local regulars’ table to play in another, distant inn in the Salzkammergut. From 12 July to 20 September 2024, small ensembles of passionate amateur musicians made guest appearances in inns in the region to provide a platform for exchange, conversation and a series of successful evenings and many a cosy afternoon in the pub.
Cinema as a guest
Two institutions, whose extinction in rural regions has often been complained of, are more lively than ever under the motto CINEMA AS A GUEST and invite you on a cinematic culinary tour through the Upper Austrian foothills of the Alps from October to November. Taverns as well as cultural-gastronomic meeting places are transformed into inviting movie theaters that have more to offer than the obligatory popcorn bag. A diverse program of current Austrian and international auteur films is provided, among others, by Cultural Initiative 08/16 Gmunden. For the unique cinema experience, the traditional Wanderkino Steininger responsible from Linz.
